On 10 and 11 May 2016, the second session of the Joint Committee for the EU-integration process was held in Bar under the cooperation agreement between the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and the Government of Montenegro.

The session was opened by Ana Blazevska, State Secretary at the Secretariat for European Affairs and Aleksandar Andrija Pejovik, State Secretary for European integration and Chief Accession Negotiator of Montenegro, while the meeting was chaired by Ramadan Nazifi, Director of the Directorate for European Union within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, and Snezana Radovik, Director-General of the Directorate for European Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro.

The joint committee is composed of representatives of the foreign ministries and representatives of other ministries from the two countries and it serves as a forum for permanent cooperation in all areas of mutual interests aimed towards accelerating the process of institutional adjustments for facilitating the adoption of the EU acquis and practices. The goal is to assists the joint preparations for EU membership through exchanging experiences from negotiations and European integration in different areas of the acquis. This meeting was focused on EU acquis’ topics, particularly: Chapter 23 – Judiciary and Fundamental Rights and Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedom and Security as well as Chapters 14 – Transport Policy and 15 – Energy.

The meeting was attended by state officials and experts from several ministries of the Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro. Experts from the two countries used the first part of the session to discuss the most important activities and results achieved in relation to the process of harmonizing domestic legislation with the EU acquis and strengthening the administrative capacities in this past period in reference to Chapters 23 and 24. The second part of the session was used to exchange experiences and practices in areas concerning Chapters 14 and 15, with a special emphasis on the status of the implementation of the soft measures in context of the upcoming Paris Summit as part of the Berlin Process to be held in July this year.
