SKOPJE, 20 June 2019 – Today, 20 June, is World Refugee Day. On this day, the world commemorates the plight of millions of refugees who are forced to leave their homes to save their lives and the lives of their children. It is also a day for raising the public awareness about the contribution that refugees make to societies and the communities that host them worldwide.

This World Refugee Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, reiterate the commitment to protect the people who are forced to flee and support them in their struggle for a dignified life free from fear.

In solidarity with refugees, the Kale fortress will tonight be lit in blue. The lighting of the fortress, which is done with the support of the City of Skopje, will last until the end of the month.

“The lighting of the Kale fortress is a symbol of solidarity and support to refugees – one of the most vulnerable categories of people on the planet, half of whom are children. The blue light is also a reminder of all the acts of solidarity that the Macedonian citizens have shown to refugees over the past decades. We hope that this spirit of solidarity will continue to live on among our citizens and will inspire others to show their support for refugees. This is especially important at a time when hate speech and xenophobia are drawing headlines. We want to demonstrate a different narrative – one of tolerance, of connection and of common values”, stated MFA Nikola Dimitrov.

On the occasion of the joint commemoration of the World Refugee Day in 2019, UNHCR Representative in North Macedonia, Monica Sandri, stated: “Every year on this day, we call for solidarity with refugees. This year we invite each and every one, individually and collectively, to take concrete steps to show support for those who had no choice but to flee their homes. Setting a personal example is the most powerful contribution we can give to build a better and more inclusive society that leaves no one behind.”

A world of solidarity, humanity and kindness starts from each and every one of us. Join UNHCR’s campaign on to show refugees that they have your support.
