Today, as part of the first day of his working visit to Berlin, Minister Nikola Dimitrov held a series of activities and meetings aimed at presenting the Macedonian arguments before the German hosts for a decision on opening accession negotiations with the EU in October.

To that end, FM Dimitrov first addressed and exchanged views with relevant interlocutors from several government institutions, members of the Bundestag and the think-tank community, during the working breakfast organized by the Körber Foundation. Afterwards, Minister Dimitrov had a meeting his colleague, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heiko Maas, where an overview was made of the achievements, current events and prospects concerning our expectations from the October EU Council. Minister Dimitrov voiced gratitude for the principled and consistent German support and friendship as well as his conviction that the opportunity for joint success will not be missed in October. Talks tackled bilateral relations and opportunities for deepening thereof, especially in the area of ​​economic cooperation. FM Maas reaffirmed the support for North Macedonia, noting that he is optimistic about the expectations of the EU Council in October and that "he no longer sees any obstacles for North Macedonia to start accession negotiations with the EU".

FM Dimitrov: "This year I’ve been a frequent visitor to Berlin and today, on the eve of the October EU Council, I came to exchange views with our German friends and emphasize once again that North Macedonia is an unequivocal opportunity for well-deserved and joint success with the EU in October. We are grateful for the German support and I am confident that the European perspective will soon be validated and recognized by all the other EU member states as well.

Minister Dimitrov also met with the Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, whereby the interlocutors exchanged views on the concrete reform results achieved by North Macedonia and on the wider regional and EU context ahead of the October Council. The Minister continued the agenda with a series of meetings with German MPs from the Bundestag: Josip Juratovic (SPD), Gunther Krichbaum (CDU, Chair of the  Committee on EU Affairs), Christian Petry (SPD), Michael Kuffer (CSU) as well as Uwe Corsepius, Chancellor Merkel's EU adviser.

Talks with the German MPs, who voiced their clear support, discussed the results and progress made by the country and the arguments as to why a positive decision in October is well-deserved, especially in light of the impending Bundestag debate in late September.

And tomorrow, Foreign Minister Dimitrov will continue with meetings with the members of the German Bundestag, Chancellor Merkel's foreign policy adviser, as well as with representatives of the German Foreign Ministry.
