The State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Zoran Popov met with the Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of the Kingdom of Spain to North Macedonia, Mr. Emilio Lorenzo Serra.

Mutual satisfaction was voiced with the current development of the relations between the two countries and the readiness to intensify the political dialogue and the overall cooperation in all areas of mutual interest with a special emphasis on advancing the economic cooperation.

State Secretary Popov extended gratitude to Spain’s consistent and principled support for the realisation of Macedonian aspirations for EU and NATO membership.  Wishing the Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell success in his new post as the EU high representative for foreign policy and security, he voiced his confidence that the support will continue throughout his new engagement. North Macedonia expects Spain to conclude the ratification of our NATO Accession Protocol as soon as possible, after the parliamentary elections, which will consequently complete our formal alliance.

Ambassador Serra stressed that Spain supports the opening of accession talks with North Macedonia and especially welcomed the decision of all political stakeholders in the country to continue with the European integration with the same pace and to implement all the necessary reforms. In terms of our NATO membership, he emphasised that Spain will take all the steps required to ratify North Macedonia’s Accession Protocol as soon as possible, once appropriate internal conditions are established.
