The Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov met today with the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos who is staying in North Macedonia for the EU-Western Balkans Ministerial Forum on Justice and Home Affairs to be held in Skopje on 18 and 19 November 2019.

Views were exchanged at the meeting on current developments in the country and the region in the aftermath of the October Council of the EU, as well as on the on-going issues within the EU itself.

Interlocutors also referred to the common contemporary challenges that impose the need for joint cooperation and action with special emphasis on migration, and in this context talks tackled the signing of the Status Agreement on Cooperation between North Macedonia and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

Minister Dimitrov reiterated that despite his sincere regret that no consensus was reached on a decision to start accession talks with the EU in October; the country will not deviate from the European course, reforms and from building good-neighbourly relations and regional cooperation.

EU Commissioner Avramopoulos voiced satisfaction with the country’s achievements in terms of the European integration. North Macedonia has shown great commitment and efforts in dealing with the security risks and challenges that have emerged from the migration crisis for which the EU is especially grateful and will continue to cooperate with the country in the future.
